Meeting Facilitation
Meeting Facilitation
There are times when meetings and other staff sessions might work better and achieve more satisfactory
results when facilitated by someone outside of the organization. Anytime the objective of the meeting is to
establish a base evaluation, or to engage in strategic planning, or to conduct a SWOT session, an outside
facilitator can be a wise resource. S/he can ask clarifying questions, track the discussion, expand ideas, and capture
concerns in an objective manner.
The facilitator can bring best practices into the session from the appropriate business sector. The facilitator
keeps the progress moving and on course. There is no tendency to defend or explain anything, since the
facilitator is a third party and is capable of harnessing energy and channeling it properly. Time is used more
efficiently and the benefits of the session are maximized.
At the end of the session, the facilitator reviews all points relevant to next steps and long range topics.
In some cases the facilitator's job is over at the end of the meeting. In other cases, organizations decide to
keep the facilitator involved to participate in future activities in order to maintain momentum. A facilitator is
often the best person to do this.
The Training Masters facilitator becomes part of the team and part of the continued activities, while
remaining unobtrusive enough to ensure that objectivity is maintained and that any follow-up communication
with employees is comfortable for them.
